Tested & Certified

The effectiveness and separation efficiency of Kappa Wavebionix® nanofilter elements has been confirmed by the accredited testing and certification institute OFI. This is the first time that a filter element for ventilation systems has been tested for the filtration efficiency of active viruses. The result confirms a viral filtration efficiency of 97.2%.

The Kappa Wavebionix® nanofilter elements save large amounts of energy compared to filter elements with comparable separation performance. The high separation efficiency enables recirculated and mixed air operation. This saves large amounts of heating and cooling energy. In a typical, medium-sized building ventilation system, the savings amount to around € 7,000 per year. This corresponds to an annual reduction of 11,000 kg of CO2.

CERTIFIKATION

Filter tests are carried out in accordance with the filter test standards with so-called A2 fine dust (sand dust, dolomite dust). Ventilation filters as well as FFP2 and FFP3 protective masks are tested using this method. However, a filter test with a type of sand dust has little significance for the separation of microorganisms or viruses in the nano range. Until now, there has been no test method for measuring virus separation efficiency. Together with our research partners, we have therefore developed a test procedure that makes it possible to test under real conditions. Viruses are applied to aerosols - just as they are in reality - and for the first time an entire filter element (not just a filter material sample) is exposed to the aerosol-virus mixture. The virus load in the clean gas is then analysed to determine the virus removal rate. The test is repeated several times to obtain a valid result. The viruses used have a size of 28 nm (nanometres = 1 millionth of a millimetre) and are therefore 5 times smaller than the coronavirus. The test shows a viral filtration efficiency of 97.2%, which is even higher for the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Innovation and technic 

The Kappa innovation is based on a special nanofibre membrane embedded in a conventional dust filter material. The Wavebionix shape of the membrane achieves 2.5 times the surface area of a conventional dust filter. As a result, the pressure loss is extremely low and the storage capacity is high.

The Kappa Wavebionix® filter elements are pioneering in the separation of nanoparticles such as fine dust, ultrafine dust, aerosols, viruses and bacteria. Despite maximum filter performance, they are exceptionally economical as they only have a very low pressure loss.
